A really useful day was spent in Graham’s lab working on gravimetric damp testing.
We covered more on data logging for condensation monitoring and the use of ibuttons for surface temperature remote monitoring. Graham has vast experience and took Bryan through the spread sheet data and the graphing tools he uses in preparing reports for clients.
Rising damp diagnosis was on the agenda too and Gravimetric damp testing was demonstrated and Graham kindly helped Bryan set up his own gravimetric testing station for use here in Yorkshire. This is the definitive method for finding out the moisture content of masonry and plaster samples. Rising damp often leaves salts deposited in the masonry and this can increase the moisture content by a huge factor and confuse electrical moisture meters.
Using this ‘oven drying’ method, the moisture caused by salts, known as the Hygroscopic moisture content is separated out from the total moisture content. Together with salt testing, to establish the type of salts present, it is a precise and valuable tool.
We now have our own Gravimetric and salts testing station here at the Sherburn in elmet office. Testing is available for domestic, local authority and commercial clients.
