The event was held at Drivers Jonas Deloitte in Leeds.
RICS matrics training coordinator Adam Osborne MRICS, asked us to present best practice in wall tie surveying and of course no structural repair cpd would be complete without details of Cintec and Helifix tie and anchor methods.
The attendees were all surveyors from the Yorkshire area and soon the discussion became a lively exchange of experiences and views.
Slideshows can be boring, but Bryan brings a dose of practicality and enthusiasm for the field which is infectious. His boot arrived full of the paraphernalia of wall tie and structural repair equipment which included plenty of props to discuss and handle; including:
- A heavy duty diamond core drilling machine (used for Cintec anchor installation).
- Samples of epoxy and polyester Resin.
- An advanced Sibtec digital micro-probe (for testing the integrity of large timber beams)
- A range of Cintec and Helifix ties.
- A large selection of old corroded wall ties; cast iron, mild steel and wrought iron.
- Many modern remedial cavity wall ties.
- Heavy duty tie bars and lateral restraints including Helifix Bowties and ?turn buckles? for adding tension to Cintec Stud anchored tie bars.
- One of our 25Kn (2.5 Tonne) tension testing rigs.
Current standards like BRE 401 and 329 were covered and explained, as was basic wall tie surveying and reporting methods.
Helifix Helibeam repairs and modern lateral restraint methods went down well, with good questions asked by the delegates. Bryan covered the use of this remarkable material in listed buildings and modern property too, using real case studies from around Yorkshire and the North.
Cintec heavy duty structural anchors were introduced; case studies from our Cintec tie work on Leeds (ARMLEY) Jail, Riber Castle and York City Walls featured. Work on more common situations like Barn conversion repairs and stone cottages were discussed.
There’s a lot to be said for getting the basics right, so Bryan covered this with an explanation of the fundamental characteristics of cementitious products, epoxy and polyester resin grout – advantages and disadvantages of each in use, in cost and in relation to health and safety and the environment.
